It helps migrants to the internet

Estebandido | 23 September 2008

Well a few weeks ago came the idea of writing a post to assist migrants with using tools available on the internet, but also truly believe that this post can be useful for exchange students, frequent travelers, backpackers, people who one way or another want to be in touch with loved ones and acquaintances, even within the same country.

I hope these tips can help you if you have any more suggestion, send it to me via e-mail for inclusion.

This is written based on my experience when I travel out, and some new things that I have known in recent months in Korea.

Blog
I think one of the most interesting things to be traveling is that you have everything you do and show everything you do, at least this is my case, so I recommend you open a blog.

According to the definition of the wikipedia one one blog (in Spanish blog) is "a regularly updated website that collects chronological texts or articles from one or more authors.

Here you can share all your experiences and everyday of your trip whenever you have an internet connection.

For this I suggest you use Wordpress is a free system to do so, just go to this page (it's in Spanish), you create an account and within 10 minutes you'll have a blog and why I suggest http://tunombre.wordpress.com Wordpress? because it is made in free software, you have many plugins, easy to use and very friendly, and is also now available in Spanish.

Photos and Photo Editor
Now if you just want to share your photos, for nothing better than Flickr. Then just go to your page, also in Spanish, you create an account if you already have a yahoo better.

Flickr is a website through which you can share all your photos, like the descriptions put in them, organize albums, collections, etc..

There are 2 types of accounts a free and paid, the difference is that the free have a monthly limit for photo uploads in paid no limit.

The most cool of Flickr is that your photos become public and more people see them, so you can receive comments, well I like that, but if not your case, you can simply put the photos as private and only you family or friends can see them.

As I mentioned earlier one of the advantages of working with wordpress is that it integrates very easily, so if you have a blog in Wordpress can download a plugin as flickrRSS and take photos as I have them on the right side of my blog.

To edit the pictures I recommend Gimp, a tool of free software, free, the software off the internet and installed in GNU / Linux, Window $, and in OSX, does not ask any favors at photoshop.

If you have many photos, I suggest you get off Picasa is a great program for archiving your photos and keep them in chronological order. It works on both GNU / Linux (Ubuntu eye and comes default F-Spot, which is the use) and $ window, not yet available in OS X.

Videos and Video Editor
If you want to share the videos you record on your travels easily nothing better than youtube simply creates an account on this page and upload your videos mentioned, share links with friends and now.

One of the drawbacks you might find is that your videos become public and anyone can see them, but there is an option whereby you make videos private, within your preferences.

To edit the videos in a simple way I recommend you use the program avidemux, is made in free software, is free and can be installed on window $, since youtube only lets you upload videos to 10 minutes or 100 MB, so You can use this tool to cut them into parts and upload it without problem.

Additionally you through plugins link your blog to your page youtube.

E-mail and chat
Today the use of e-mail and chat happened to be of great importance, is why it is a very advisable to get in touch with family and friends.

In order to chat you need an e-mail free of charge and your family must also have an e-mail with the same provider. Ejm yourname @ hotmail, tufamilia@hotmail.com.

MSN is currently the most popular chat system in Ecuador, but he follows in the footsteps gmail and Yahoo.

Now to be able to chat need to download a program for each of these different chats, what really makes it difficult to operate several programs at once. That's why there is an application developed in free software called Pidgin, works also on window $, you install a program and you have all your chat accounts with a single application is great. The truth I recommend this application.

Internet Calling and Video Conferencing
The workaround for this is Skype, really great to be in touch with home. You simply need to create an account, your family, too, share their accounts and added to the contacts. When they do can be called via the Internet for free, if internet speed is good and you have a webcam, you can also take video at the same time, moreover, that you can chat.

Calls between Skype users have no cost, but if you want a conventional phone call you have to buy air time through your credit card on the website of Skype, it sounds loud and clear when talking.

Football and Television Internet
The truth I was surprised when a friend told me that here in Seoul saw the football without problems and I've found.

If you love football fan can watch football on the internet for this there are two pages that I know when rojadirecta.com and justin.tv on these two pages you find football games not only in Ecuador and South America but also international football.

You have to be aware of the times and ready, many of them are live, others delayed sometimes pass them.

Now if you want international channels can install programs TvAnts and SopCast, Miro, most of these channels are in English.

Social Networks
If you dislike both the technology to mount your blog and one count of Flickr, then you can create an account on Facebook, or Hi5.

Are social networks through which you look for your friends and include them to your list of acquaintances, so here you also get access to posting videos, photos, etc.. They can see your updates and everything you are doing.

Although not as before because I prefer to use my blog, if you ask me which one to use, recommend Facebook, so I left to your discretion to use them.

The time, dates and weather
One of the problems we have when traveling is that sometimes you lose track of time and to call home becomes a mess, that's why I suggest you visit this page TimeandDate.com find the time there not only in Ecuador but of all countries.

Additionally, I suggest reviewing the page from weather.com to see how the weather will be generally the predictions are correct in many cases I have found useful.

Well this is what so far as I can give suggestions, and do not forget before you leave home to send a message to all your friends and family with the respective links to enable them to continue your trip.

If there are more suggestions on the way, I'll update this post.
