The use of chat to be commonplace in the past day to day, we have: IRC, MSN, Yahoo, AOL, Google Talk among others, but for each of these need a specific program to chat, so we have to be installed all these programs on our computer and it is very annoying to have so many windows open, so I suggest you use this program Pidgin.
Pidgin (formerly Gaim) is a multi-platform instant messaging client capable of connecting to multiple networks (multi) and accounts (multiaccounting) simultaneously. Explained best way is a program through which you can connect to different chat systems, and no need to install 4 or 5 different programs with this unique program can connect to all these systems: AOL, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ , IRC, Jabber, Lotus Sametime, MSN Messenger, Novell Groupwise, OpenNap, SILC, Yahoo! Messenger, Zephyr.
This program was developed for GNU / Linux in the first instance but can now be installed on different operating systems like Window $, Mac OSx, best of all it is free because it is under the GPL Free Software
You can download the program from the following address: http://pidgin.im/pidgin/download
To install on Ubuntu Feisty 04.07 you can find the files. Deb at the following address: http://www.getdeb.net/release.php?id=1045
You must download 2 files and pidgin pidgin-data, install the pidgin pidgin-data and then, and be ready.
Mind you, If you had installed Gaim on your machine would be good to do a backup first and then uninstall it, since it might give conflicts, the easiest way to uninstall it through synaptic.
Enjoy it!
