Ubuntu 8.10 on HP Pavilion tx1420us
estebandido | 5 November 2008
Well a few days ago came the version 8.10 of Ubuntu, so I downloaded it and decided to try on my machine.
So far I can say that truth is a very good version, and I really like the changes I've seen that have been made are the best.
My machine has 3 partitions root, swap, home, that way it's easier to change distro and more safely have my files and preferences.
I made the respective format of the root, and after finishing it, I could see that this version starts much faster than 8.04.
That has worked for me (from what I've tried so far)
- Audio: no problem, even before working alone with the alsa mixer, but this time I decided to put everything to PulseAudio Sound Server and works great, really worth all the audio programs I work with no problems.
Well I have it configured:
Sound Events, Music and Movies, Audio Conferencing all with PulseAudio Sound Server option
Defaul Mixer Tracks: HDA NVidia (Alsa Mixer) - Video: the best, and they've released an Nvidia driver version 177, which works without problems and now work for all purposes, in the previous version gave some problems but this has been corrected.
- Touchscreen (Touch Screen): Searching and searching I found the solution yet but I have a problem when synchronizing the screen, but then goes to funciona.Simplemente terminal and run this command
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouchThen in the menu System / Administration will see a box that says Calibrate Touchscreen, follow the steps listed there, reboot your username and ready, the touchscreen is working. You can find more information on this page . - Red: no problems
- USB smooth
- SD Reader: no problems
- Webcam: Works seamlessly with both Skype and with aMSN
- Wireless: Uses a proprietary driver Broadcom STA wireless driver (Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)), it is directly active the system and the wireless works without problem.
In version 8.04 juggle touched to operate the wireless, but now is very simple. - Microphone: Both the two microphones that come on the screen, as the front mic work without problem, so if you must choose which one to use in the sound options
- Headphones: No problem, plug in any of the plugs, and they work.
Applications:
- Skype: at the beginning I had some problems but I had to make some adjustments in the program preferences. You're going to Options / Sound Devices and choose here:
Sound in: HDA NVIDIA (hw: Nvidia, 0)
Sound Out: press
Ringing: press
If you leave the option labeled Allow Skype to Automatically adjust my mixer mild, but you can remove.
Eye in the Audio preferences Ubuntu has all the options that are selected with PulseAudio Sound Server.
And there you have to choose which microphone you want to use those at the top of the screen or you can you connect, so that eye.
Restart your laptop and go, but is key to restart, it will not work.
- Firefox: At first I worked the audio on youtube videos, uninstalled the flash pluggin through synaptic.
I got back from the Adobe website. Deb and voila, restart Firefox and go running smoothly. - Audacity: This program does not work with PulseAudio Sound Server, so you have to in the preferences used in Playback and Recording OSS: / dev / dsp issue resolved there and works well.
- Pidgin: Actually this is a great program for managing chats with this management all my chat accounts of various programs such as MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Gmail, and now I can handle even the chatting on Facebook and Twitter, for this is need to install 2 additional plugins. The plugin is called pidgin-facebook and pidgin-microblog .
Now if you want security in your conversations and spy on you which one converts best to encrypt your Pidgin, for this you need to download a plugin called pidgin-encryption synaptic. You install it and activate it, the other person who also uses Pidgin should have it installed and enabled, as you begin to talk encrypt your conversation, so if someone somewhere is reading them, you can not do it. - VirtualBox: For study purposes I have to use virtualbox to run some proprietary programs, got the version from virtualbox Ubuntu 8.04, when I installed it I got a message saying if I wanted to save the configuration files above, we checked the option to delete and go.
Reboot the laptop, go to a terminal window and make your user becomes part of the group of virtualboxsudo gpasswd -a tu_usuario vboxusersthen you get the message that your user has been added to the list, restart the computer, and you work without problem, yet if you have any problems I recommend following this tutorial and Cucumbers Among Tuxes . - Wicd: I had some problems with this program to manage the network, both as wireless cable, but I think more time will a new version, so I suggest not to install yet. Two days ago an update came out (10 / 12/2008) with version 1.5.6 Wicd problems have been corrected from previous weeks and it works like a charm so I recommend you install it, I much prefer to handle both LAN and Wireless networks.
- Amarok: Under Settings, go to "Engine" and select pulseaudio output plugin, and go.
If you have a large collection of music do you recommend using a mysql database, setup is easy and simple and really want Amarok to become much faster.
This tutorial I took from this page and I have been working very well.sudo apt-get install mysql-server mysql-clientAfter finishing the installation you will open a window where blue will ask you to put your password for user the root of the base.Si not you open the window to change the key you have to follow this step, but continues with the remaining steps and obvious this step. It's just like making the blue window, but through the terminal. (Replace with your key mykey).mysqladmin -u root password MICLAVEthenmysql -p -u root
CREATE DATABASE amarok;
USE mysql;
GRANT ALL ON amarok.* TO amarok@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'MICLAVE';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
quitIn Amarok, go to settings / configure Amarok / Collection
Select MySQL.
And use the following information in the respective fields
Hostname: 127.0.0.1
Database: amarok
Port: 3306
Username: amarok
Password: MyPasswordDone and now enjoys the speed of Amarok.
- OpenOffice 2.4 upgrade to OpenOffice 3
The easiest way I found how to do it is through this page , but here are just explico.Vas to repositories and add ahídeb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu mainLuego intrepid upgrade the repositories and you'll automatically going to tell you that an update of OpenOffice, it takes like 80 mb download, so take some time depending on your internet connection.Ubuntu works for both 32-bit and 64 bit
In Brief
From what I've been testing the system until the moment I really like. If before it was easy for the user today is even more, so I think this distro is entering the most used worldwide.
As more applications and then test the other features of the laptop, I will update this post if you have any problems let me know, maybe you can help solve it ;).

ICA | 7 January 2009Greetings, first of all thanks for the time to post these tips.
Now a doubt, I have to enable the driver fights for video accelerator recommended that puts the driver manager. This is the version 177. What happens is you do as it is downloading but nomas not enable anything, have any idea why? Or how I can activate, because I think that's the reason I can not activate the touchscreen. By placing the command
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
gives me this error
E: Could not find package xserver-xorg-input-evtouch
Thanks for your time, greetings
@ ICA: Greetings Look I also use the driver that you see
estebandido | 7 January 2009@ ICA: Greetings
Look I also use this driver appears there as recommending the 177, active through System / Administration / Hardware Drivers
There simply select activate, and if you have not fallen, then lower it and turn it on, then restart the computer and should be working, should turn green when the button is activated.
Now for the command sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch know I just try and tell me in my case if I have installed the latest version, which I suggest is that you change your mirror of the repositories, you 'll sources and uses software from main mirror, sometimes there are repositories that do not have all the packages and give those errors but in the main, should be all.
I hope you serve

You install the alsa and the version 8.4 cost me a little but that functioned achieve the microphones, auticulares tickets and all this integrated into skype. When installing version 8.10 andubo me sound without problems but I can not run ahcer nor enter the microphone headset. Not to mention the skype.
I'll keep looking to find a solution and posting it here because it is difficult to find information on this topic.

estebandido | 25 February 2009@ Martin:
I recommend you all to Pulse Audio change in preferences, I had problems similar to yours, but if you have installed the version 8.10 and fixes.
Besides that ALSA does not let you run two programs at once the audio, while PULSE if you do, which is an advantage in certain cases.
Try various settings in Skype, but that if every time you change the settings of Skype you have to close the program and reopen it.
I hope you can solve your problem and you share the same solution.

estebandido | 17 March 2009@ Jose luis:
Look what you should try first is if your microphone is working well, you can try with audacity and see if it isntalas to record the audio is coming in, and obviously if you can hear is all good.
Now if you're trying to make an announcement ip, it all depends on what program you use, try Ekiga work without problems, there are other programs that are complicated about it.
It works well with ekiga you but you wrong another, is simply a matter of the program, eye also have to consider your consumption of bandwidth and if your connection is not as good communication will sound choppy.

The instruction sudo "apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-evtouch" makes me work but ... the touchscreen calibration tool that comes in the menu System / Administration called "Calibrate Touchscreen" I do not calibrate the screen. I have also seen in / etc/X11 / that there are multiple xsessions and that the famous xorg.conf no longer worth anything: I mean that which is not the file that loads the configuration because if I delete the touchscren xorg. conf still running around and uncalibrated.
